Challenge
Santos operates large-scale onshore upstream production assets across Australia's CSG and Cooper Basin regions, managing hundreds of wells and production facilities. Engineering teams were spending significant time on manual setpoint adjustments, routine monitoring, and responding to operational events that could instead be handled autonomously. The volume and geographic spread of assets made it difficult to maintain consistent production performance with existing staffing levels.
Solution
Santos partnered with Kelvin to deploy SmartApps across wellsite operations, facilities, and production activities. Working with SIG Machine Learning, the team built and deployed autonomous control applications using the Kelvin platform, integrating with existing infrastructure through supported industrial protocols. SmartApps provided continuous monitoring, generated autonomous control recommendations within defined guardrails, and logged every action and outcome for engineering review. The program was formalized through a multi-year enterprise software agreement in October 2023.
